CATARACTS
WHAT IS CATARACT ?
Cataract is the name given to any cloudiness occurring in the lens of the eye. The lens of the eye focusses our vision. If the lens becomes blurry, so does vision.

SYMPTOMS
The most common symptom of cataract is a slow blurring or clouding of the vision. It is often described as looking through a fog or a steamed up window. Some people also describe haloes or mild double vision sensation.

CAUSES
The most common cause for cataract is ageing. The normal structure of the lens becomes disrupted and this means vision is not clear. The onset is usually very slow. Cataract can also be caused by trauma, like a blow to the eye, different diseases and some medications like steroids. People with diabetes often get cataracts earlier in life.
TREATMENT
Cataracts are treated by surgery. The surgery is performed as a day case procedure using eye drops as the anesthetic. The procedure is painless and normally lasts under 20 minutes.

The blurry lens is removed and is replaced by a silicone intraocular lens. Each lens is chosen specifically for each patient to optimize vision. Usually both eyes are done within a short space of time. The recovery time (no swimming, no make up) is 4 weeks, but vision tends to be much improved the day after surgery.
